MINUTES OF RECENT MEETINGS Deep
River Rotary Log December
11, 2007 Opening: President
Gail greeted the 7 members and 6 guests by inviting Tim
to lead us in prayer. Our guests included; Oliver
Greegan, Student of the Month and his Mother Mary
Hambor, Student Council Advisor at Valley Regional Molly
Bohanon and Alex Socci, Interact Club at Valley and participants in
RYLA (Rotary Youth Leader Awards) Phyllis
Haut President's Notes: Gail
noted some activities that other Interact Groups were participating
in, which included serving meals and projects in Homeless Shelters. Committee
Reports: Car
Show - Save
the date of June 8th for our 2008 Car Show. Devitt
Field has been reserved. The executive board discussed the
need for a co-coordinator and someone to organize the ad
booklet by January 1 in order for the show to go on. Holiday
Party
-December 18. Kevin, Hedy, Ken and Tom will head up. DuGlace
will cater. The Historical Society building has been reserved
from 5:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. with cocktails at 6:00 and dinner at 7:00.
Tinder will collect $35. per person. Hedy reported 38 are signed
up to attend. There will be no meeting on December 25 or January
1. Friday's
At Five
- is an initiative to attract new Rotary members by sending out a
letter to all Deep River Business Owners to attend a social hour at
the Ivory on a monthly basis to discuss Rotary membership. The
letter is being composed by Tom Lindner and Tim Haut and will be sent
out after the holidays. "Friday's At Five" will be
posted on our website and begin the end of January. Follow up
calls will be made to prospective participants. Tri-Town
Rotary Club Meeting - will be held Wednesday 6:00 p.m. on January 16 at Camp Hazen for
a presentation on the Water Project. No Tuesday meeting on
January 15. Cost is $27. with a $5. donation going to the Water
Project. Program: Student
of the Month, Oliver was honored by Ms. Hambor for helping to organize
the Valley Regional Mentoring Program for incoming freshmen. Molly
and Alex shared highlights of their weekend at the RYLA Conference.
They were very enthusiastic and eager to see this opportunity be made
available in coming years to members of the Interact Club. Upcoming

4, 2007 Opening: President Gail greeted the 10 members and 63
guests by inviting Tim to lead us in prayer and Ken in song.
Our guests included; Roy Jefferson, guest of Ken Wood and a
prospective new member, Resident State Trooper Burgarella who
presented our program and was guest of Dick Smith, and Phyllis Haut.
We all welcomed back John Underhill who is on leave of absence from
the Club. President's
Notes: Gail reported the Bill Gates Foundation
has donated $100,000,000. which is being matched by the Rotary
Foundation over the next three years to go toward the irradication of
polio across the globe. Gail and Skip encouraged Club members to
consider a donation to the Rotary Foundation at this time of year, to
help support the humanitarian goals of Rotary. Committee Reports: Car Show - Save the date of June 8th for our 2008 Car Show. Devitt

A request was made by the Early Childhood Council of Deep
River, Chester and Essex to support the Fund with a donation of
$4,000 again this year, as was done in the prior year. After
discussion, the motion was made by Tim and seconded by Tom, to donate
$2,000. now and see how our finances are going by the end of year with
a postponed decision of whether the remaining $2,000. scholarship would be
made. This decision will be based on our future fund raising. Program: Trooper Burgarella presented a program on identity theft as
being the number one crime in the area and in the nation. He
offered suggestions of how to protect oneself against identity theft
(using a shredder was his top suggestion). He also noted what a
victim should do in the case of identity theft. Membership: Ken Wood has been named an honorary member Ken LaRoche has submitted his resignation due to returning to school full time Membership Application for Douglas DeCerbo, new
Executive Director for St. John's School,

20, 2007 Opening: President Gail greeted the 9 members and 6 guests
by inviting Ken to lead us in prayer and song. Our guests were
Roger LeCompte, Padre Carlos and Celestino Cumio from Mozambique,
John Pfarr from the Essex Rotary Club,
and Mark Piscatelli, a guest of Robin who is training to be manager of
a Liberty Bank branch in North Haven. Committee Reports: Car Show - Save the date of June 8th for our 2008 Car Show. Devitt
Field has been reserved. The executive board will discuss
on December 4 to determine the next steps to be made. Before the
show can happen, a co-coordinator to visit car dealers and organize
the booklet must be named. Holiday Party - Kevin, Hedy, Ken and Tom will head up. Plans are to
have DuGlace cater at the Historical Society building if it is
available. Watch for more information, but save December 18. Election of New Officers - A slate of new officers for 2008 must be named in
December. If you or anyone is interested in the position of
President Elect, Secretary or Treasurer, please contact Gail.
Lisa Bibbiani is our new incoming President. This will be on the
executive board agenda in December. Program: Roger LeCompte talked about how he went from retired
hospital administrator to missionary in Mozambique
and some of the projects he has worked on there. Father Carlos
talked about the role of the church in bringing peace to their war
torn country and some of their hopes for the future of Mozambique
. Father Carlos leaves Essex to travel next to Indiana
to visit with the Mennonite Churches there to helped to negotiate

Deep River Rotary Log November 13, 2007 Opening: President
Gail welcomed guests; Student of the Month, Trenton Rodriquez, his Mom
and Dad, Don Gates, Principal of Valley Regional High School, Dale
Arsenault, Guidance Counselor at Vinal Technical School in Middletown,
and Phyllis Haut. Committee
Reports: Christmas
Party – Ken Wood
reported that DuGlace Restaurant will not be ready in time for our
December 18th party, but they offered to cater a party for
us at the Carriage House on that date.
Kevin and Hedy will investigate this possibility. RYLA
– Our Rotary
Youth volunteers will be invited in to share their experiences with us
at a future date to be announced. Leaf
raking – for
those in the community who need help, will be offered free of charge
by the Interact Club. Notify Gail with names. Car
Show – Gail and
Skip will meet with Larry Morse to discuss the car show on Tuesday
morning, November 20 at 8:00 a.m.
Another co-coordinator to work with Marge is being sought. Program: Student
of the month, Trenton, was awarded his certificate by Gail. He will also receive a savings bond and a book donated to the
Essex Library in his name. Trenton
will attend the Air Force Academy in the fall.
He received numerous accolades by Principal Don Gates,
including his achievements academically, in sports and in leadership. Tinder
introduced Dale Arsenault, guidance counselor from Vinal Technical
School who gave an overview of the 600 student school, which offers 11
fields of hands-on study that alternates between nine weeks in the
classroom with nine weeks in shop. Upcoming
Events: Our
guests next week will be Padre Carlos and Celestino Cumio from Maciene,
Mozambique. Also Roger
LeCompte and Helen Smits who will talk about their work in the health
field, schools and other areas to help improve life in Mozambique.
We encourage everyone to come and bring guests.
Deep
River Rotary Log November
6, 2007 Opening: Vice President Lisa opened the meeting in the absence of
President Gail. 10 members were around the table including John
Underhill and Phyllis Haut. Tim led us in prayer and America the
Beautiful. Committee Reports: Christmas Party – Kevin is contacting DuGlace about hosting our
Christmas Party which is slated for Tuesday December 11. If they
are not ready for business, it was suggested that we wait until
January for our get together. Kevin will report back to us. Liberty Bank Thanksgiving Drive
– money containers are out in all Deep River businesses reports
Robyn and Lisa who are heading it up. Liberty Bank will match
.50 to each $1.00 collected. Family Day Road Race – Tom Lindner presented the Club with a check for
$1,870. representing one-half of the proceeds from the race. The
proceeds have been shared with the Park and Rec who co-sponsored the
Race. Program: Program Chairman, Skip, presented the Club with apple pie ala
mode in lieu of a program. Thanks Skip!! Upcoming Events: November 13 – Vinal Tech Presentation November 20 – Roger LeCompte & Helen Smits with

Deep River Rotary Log October 30, 2007 Opening: President
Gail welcomed 11 members and our 6 guests.
Tim Haut led the prayer and Glenn Bassett led us in God Bless
America and Happy Birthday to Tom Lindner.
Our guests included Donna Lash and Joan Michaud from the Old
Saybrook Club, Peter Salerno from Massauchetts (working at St.
John’s School), Gina Sopneski, from Town Hall, and our speaker, Hank
from the YMCA Board. Committee
Reports: Thanksgiving
Baskets – Robyn
reported that Liberty Bank has begun work on the annual Thanksgiving
project. Membership
– The Executive
Committee accepted the application of Sarah Lehmus-Lombardo.
Tom Lindner will invite her to complete her application to be
voted on at our next meeting on Nov. 6.
Tom encouraged each member to focus on recruiting a new member. Dictionaries
– were handed out before the meeting today to all of the third
graders at Deep River Elementary School. President’s
Corner: Gail
shared thank you notes from High Hopes ($100. gift in memory of Bob
Stalsberg) and from Deep River Elementary School for the dictionaries. Club
Make Ups – for
those members who participate in a Club project ( ie: meals on wheels,
wine tasting, soup kitchen,) hours donated toward a Club project can
now be counted as attendance make up.
Members are asked to e-mail me at margeschofield@sbcglobal.net
with the dates, hours of their time donated to a Club project, to get
attendance credit. This
will improve our Club attendance record. Voting

volunteered to call in the Deep River voting results to the AP in
exchange for a $50. donation to our Club.

show by Board Member Hank and Paul Mohabir.

23, 2007 Opening: President
Gail opened the meeting by greeting our 12 members and 8 guests
plus 2 seeing eye dogs, Brady & Barton. Our guests included:
Barbara Sizer, Kris Lindner and Eileen Marston from "Guiding
Eyes For the Blind", Bob Ames, visitor from the Niantic Rotary
Club, Principal Dick Pietrick from Deep River Elementary School, third
grade teacher, Pam Austin, from DRES, and Phyllis Haut. Committee Reports: Wine
Tasting Report - Many kudos and congratulations were expressed to Hedy
Watrous who headed up the successful event. Treasurer, Tinder
Baser, reported that to date $13,370. has come in, but more revenue is
still expected. $10,000. was realized from the auction, $2,400.
from ticket sales and Tom Lindner sold $525. in raffle tickets.
Walmart has pledged a $1,000. community grant which is yet to
come in. Membership
- Tom Lindner brought in a membership application for Sarah Lehmus-Lombardo,
Banking Business Development Officer for Citizens Bank. President’s
Corner: Gail
announced: ·At
the upcoming Foundation Dinner, Skip will give a presentation on our
water project. ·Our
money container for Ernie's Filters will be shared with our local
Interact Club, who wanted to use it at their meetings. ·Two
students will be sponsored by our club for $235. each to attend RYLA.
One of the students to apply, whom the Club decided to sponsor, was
Hedy's son, Alex. ·A
letter of thanks was shared from Middlesex Habitat for Humanity for
our $1,000. gift. ·An
inspirational reading about leadership and "Geese Flying in
V Formation" was shared by Gail. It was from the Rotary
Council of President's Meeting which Gail attended. Program: Dick
Pietrick and Pam Austin accepted a token dictionary from the Club
which represents the 48 dictionaries that will be distributed by
Rotary members to the third graders at Deep River Elementary School.
The dictionaries will be used throughout the year and will be taken
home by the students at the end of the school year. Pam
presented the club with a large thank you card decorated by the
third graders. Barbara
and Eileen presented an interesting overview of "Seeing Eyes for
the Blind", and the raising of puppies such as Brady and Barton
(yellow and black labs), who are being prepared for a life as a guide
dog. Kris and Tom Lindner are presently raising one of the
puppies, who under their guidance will learn their "people
skills" for a year before entering the academy and eventually
placement with a blind owner for 5-8 years. Upcoming
Events: Executive Board meets at 11:00 a.m. on October 30.

2, 2007 Opening: We

Caltabiano, D.V.M. - Traveling vetenarian and our speaker. Paul
Mohabir led us in prayer and Lynn in song. President
Gail, welcomed everyone and opened the meeting. President’s
Corner: ·
Gail
shared a thank you note from Nell Johnson, for being named
Citizen of the Year. ·
Kevin
and Hedy volunteered to head up a search for the Rotary Holiday
Celebration. Suggestions were the Lace Factory and the new
Bistro opening in Deep River. ·
Robyn
recommended that we give thought some year to combine with other area
Rotary clubs for our annual Holiday gathering and recommended the new
River House in East Haddam as a possible location. Committee
Reports: Rotarian
Leslie Clark, from California, who heads up all of the Rotary Water
projects will be the guest of honor and speaker on October 17, 2007,
6:00 p.m. at Essex Meadows. All members are invited. Jim
Delano and Kevin Brewer offered to represent our club.
Cost of the dinner is $25./person. Other interested guests can
contact Susan Carpenter at the Meadows who is coordinating this event.
Leslie will present a slide show and update of the water filter
project in the Phillapines and also the two wells that are being dug
in Africa. Wine
Tasting -
October 20, 5:00-8:00 p.m. St. Joseph's Parish Hall in Chester.
5 tickets were distributed to each member in attendance with a request
to sell as many tickets as possible for $20. each. The club
voted to offer free tickets to each sponsor or donor of the event.
Kevin offered to print new yellow tickets that will be available next
week for donors. Memoriam
for Bob Stalsburg
- Jim Delano made a motion that $100. be alloted as a donation to High
Hopes in memory of Bob by the Deep River Club. Bob recently
passed away and is a former president of our club. Family
Day Race -
Tom Lindner reported that the final figures from the Race still have
not been tallied, but the approximate amount that would be coming to
Rotary from our work on the race is $1900. Program
Speaker: The
traveling vet, John Caltabiano, gave an informative overview of his
work and the work of the new non-profit TEAM, which is a mobile feline
unit that travels throughout the state. The mission of TEAM is
to neuter cats as a way to reduce the number of unwanted pets and to
reduce incidents of rabies. Upcoming
